Adventure along Pee Dee’s Rivers
Even if you’re a first-time visitor of the Pee Dee Region, you’ve likely heard of at least one of the State Scenic Rivers located here: the Great Pee Dee (also known as the Pee Dee or Big Pee Dee), the Little Pee Dee, and Black and Lynches Rivers. Each of these blackwater rivers offers a unique paddling adventure filled with panoramic views of our area.
The Great Pee Dee Scenic River runs through six of our seven counties, giving you an opportunity like none other to experience the Pee Dee by water. Along the way, you’ll see a wide range of local wildlife—alligators, bobcats, foxes, deer, turtles, and a colorful array of waterbirds, from Great blue herons and great egrets to ospreys, white ibises, and many more.
While paddling the Great Pee Dee, you can easily change course and connect to the Little Pee Dee, Black, and Lynches Rivers.
At just six to ten feet deep, the Little Pee Dee River is great for swimming—and it’s an excellent choice for those looking to cast a line during their exploration.
The Black River runs through Lee and Williamsburg Counties, offering gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape of lush forests and farmlands.
And Lynches River, which flows through Lee and Florence Counties, features a number of small islands, beautiful bluffs, and artesian wells.
Explore the SC Revolutionary Rivers Trail
If you’re a “river rat” at heart and also love American history, we recommend including the SC Revolutionary Rivers Trail in your plans. This 66-mile course is a National Recreation Trail that’s accessible from Lynches River via Lynches River County Park and flows to the confluence with the Great Pee Dee River. You can explore on your own or arrange for a local outfitter to take you on a guided tour.
Live It up on the Lake
For visitors with a love for lake life, Lake Prestwood is just the ticket. Located in Lawton Park in historic Hartsville, this picturesque lake is loved by locals and visitors alike for not only its beautiful waters but also for the lush pine-cypress forest surrounding it.
Bring your own kayak, canoe, or boat—or rent one from one of Pee Dee’s outfitters—and set out for a day full of swimming, paddling, and exploring in the cool lake waters.
When it’s time for a break from your explorations, drop anchor at the lakeside park and enjoy lunch at one of the picnic shelters while the kiddos run around the playgrounds. Before hitting the water again, take a stroll along the park’s boardwalk and pier and soak up some of the best views you’ll find in the Pee Dee.
Discover Kalmia Gardens
Sprinkle some adventure in your day on the lake with a brief detour to one of the Pee Dee Region’s botanical gardens. Float over to the lake’s connection to Black Creek and follow the scenic waterway down to the magnificent Kalmia Gardens, a 35-acre public botanical garden featuring lovely woodlands, scenic trails, and diverse plant and animal life.
Dive into a Day of Fun at the Waterpark
If you prefer a less rustic way to cool off, look no further than Neptune Island Waterpark in Hartsville. This seasonal hot spot is open May–September and features a variety of activities and attractions for whatever pace of play you’re looking for.
Get your fill of action and thrills on the waterpark’s four water slides. For an extra adrenaline rush, hop on the triple racing slide. Dance your way around the Piratesville Splash Pad. Ride the surf in the Castaway Bay Wave Pool. Leave your worries behind and float the quarter mile-long lazy river.
Whether you’re looking for an adventurous or a relaxing time on the water, you’ll find the best of both worlds on Pee Dee’s waterways.
