This 9-acre park is being maintained by the National Council of Negro Wmen, Lee County Section, as a memorial and the birthplace of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. Dr. Bethune was born in 1875 five miles north of Mayesville, SC in what was then Sumter County. In 1902, parts of Sumer, Kershaw, and Darlington Counties combined to form Lee County. Dr. Bethune was a noted educator who founded Bethune-Cookman College in Florida and an activist serving as president of the National Council of Negro Women. Open by appointment only.
