Honoring the Swamp Fox
As the nation celebrated the Bicentennial of the American Revolution in 1976, Marion County paid tribute to its own hero of independence—General Francis Marion. A dedicated committee, led by B. Pratt Gasque, worked to erect a statue of the Revolutionary War patriot on the Marion County Courthouse Green. Other committee members included Dr. Robert Bass, Mrs. C.D. Joyner, Jr., M. Gault Beeson, and Millard Osborne.
Renowned sculptor Ramojus Mozoliauskas was commissioned to create the monument. A Lithuanian immigrant who arrived in the U.S. in 1950, Mozoliauskas built a reputation as one of America’s most talented monument sculptors from his Chicago studio. His design features a larger-than-life General Marion, standing in an alert, cautioning pose, forever watching over the town that bears his name.
The statue was officially dedicated on April 9, 1976, with State Senator Ralph Gasque presiding over the ceremony. Dr. Robert D. Bass, a distinguished scholar and author of The Swamp Fox, delivered the dedication address. This statue marked the first-ever monument created in honor of General Francis Marion.
