The Pee Dee Region commemorates the SC250
South Carolina is commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with a statewide initiative known as SC250. This multiyear effort honors the people, places, and events that shaped the fight for independence.
During the Revolutionary War, the counties of the Pee Dee region played a critical role in South Carolina’s fight for independence. In Darlington, Florence, and Lee Counties, General Francis Marion—the famed “Swamp Fox”—used the swamps and rivers to launch surprise attacks on British forces. Marion and Williamsburg Counties were hotbeds of Patriot resistance, where local militias disrupted British supply lines and defended their communities. Though less frequently mentioned in major battles, Dillon and Marlboro Counties contributed manpower and resources, while Marlboro also served as home to settlers deeply invested in the cause for liberty. Together, these counties reflect the resilience and strategic importance of the Pee Dee during America’s fight for freedom.
