Revisiting the History Of The “Swamp Fox” & The Pee Dee Region in the American Revolutionary War
While the American Revolutionary War began in Massachusetts, a significant portion of the fighting took place in South Carolina and—you guessed it—the Pee Dee Region. The area’s towns and cities are brimming with a long, rich history that is still evident in historic districts and sites today.
In fact, one of South Carolina’s very own, Francis Marion—known by many as the “Swamp Fox”—played an irreplaceable role in the War for Independence.
Read on to learn more about the fascinating history of General Marion and the Pee Dee Region in the American Revolutionary War—along with museums and sites where you can explore it all more in person on a trip to the area.
The Pee Dee Region’s “Swamp Fox”
Before and even during the Revolutionary War, Pee Dee towns like Bennettsville, Florence, and Marion had yet to be established. This area of the region was home to Presbyterian settlers. However, the Pee Dee Country became a home base for Brigadier General Francis Marion and his militia in 1780 following the capture of Charleston by the British Army.
Using tactics he learned from the Cherokee during his time as a soldier in the French and Indian War 20 years prior, Marion and his men outwitted countless British troops right from the swamps along the Pee Dee and Santee Rivers. Their brave, unrelenting fight against the redcoats earned Marion the famous nickname, the “Swamp Fox.”
(Fun fact: The beloved 2000 film, The Patriot, featuring Mel Gibson, is loosely based on General Marion and his militia.)
His name lives on in our country’s great history, and carries a special place in the heart of the Pee Dee Region to this day. Marion County, for example, is named in his honor. His life and legacy can be traced at local museums, historic sites, and of course, the very swamps he used to his advantage in the war.
